Consumers, <strong>increasingly educated<\/strong>, are now venturing off the beaten path, eager to discover wines they are not used to taste.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Still Wines in the United States<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p><strong>Still wines<\/strong> are the <strong>most consumed type of wine in the United States<\/strong>. While <strong>red wines<\/strong> are still the most popular, <strong>white wines<\/strong> and <strong>ros\u00e9 wines<\/strong> have seen their sales increase in recent years. In the United States, women consume more wine than men, representing 58% and 42% of consumers respectively. The same is true for the <strong>consumption of imported wines<\/strong>, which is much higher among women than among men.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Sparkling wines in the United States<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>Although <strong>still wines<\/strong> are the most consumed wine category, <strong>sparkling wines<\/strong> have made a 50% jump in consumption since 2019! If <strong>Prosecco<\/strong> wins the gold medal for <strong>sparkling wine imports<\/strong> in the United States, <strong>Champagne<\/strong> is also on the list of <strong>Americans&#8217; favorite bubbles<\/strong>, followed by <strong>cr\u00e9mants<\/strong> from all regions that they are slowly getting to know.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>Importing wine into the United States<\/strong><\/h2>\n<h3><strong>French wines, among the favorites!<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>In the United States, <strong>imported wines<\/strong> are dominated by <strong>five countries<\/strong>, with Italy in first place, followed closely by <strong>France<\/strong>, then <strong>Spain<\/strong>, <strong>Australia<\/strong> and <strong>Chile<\/strong>. Historically, France was the leading wine exporting country to the U.S., but since 2020 <strong>Italy<\/strong> has taken the lead.<\/p>\n<p>This is due to the 25% tariffs imposed by the<strong> Trump administration on French wines<\/strong>, <strong>Spanish wines<\/strong> and <strong>German wines<\/strong> from 2019 to 2021. France has indeed suffered from these additional taxes, while Italian wines have found themselves in a favorable position.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>American-style wine communication<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>The United States is another continent and therefore another way of doing things&#8230; the American way! <strong>French winemakers<\/strong> wishing to conquer this market must therefore show adaptation and originality.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>A communication based on grape varieties<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>If <strong>France<\/strong> and<strong> Europe<\/strong> are used to communicate on their wines with the region and the <strong>Appellation d&#8217;Origine Contr\u00f4l\u00e9e (AOC)<\/strong> or <strong>Protected Designation of Origin (PDO)<\/strong> in <strong>North America<\/strong>, we speak in grape variety! Indeed, the appellations of origin and<strong> Geographical Indications (PGI)<\/strong> are not recognized outside the <strong>European Union<\/strong>. Moreover, in the United States, we use the <strong>names of grape varieties<\/strong>. Among these, the favorite of Americans remains <strong>Chardonnay<\/strong>, the most cultivated grape variety in the world! In order to attract the attention of Americans, it is in the interest of the French to <strong>promote their wines<\/strong> using the grape varieties used in their vintages.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Wine, an experience above all !<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>For Americans, and especially<strong> young wine drinkers<\/strong>, the <strong>experience is the most important thing<\/strong>. Young tasters, composed of the so-called <strong>&#8216;millenials&#8217; generation<\/strong>, are looking for the <strong>whole experience<\/strong>, to go beyond the simple glass of wine. They want to know the winery, in <strong>pictures<\/strong> or <strong>videos<\/strong> and ideally, <strong>in person<\/strong>! Always looking for<strong> traceability<\/strong> and <strong>meaning<\/strong>, these young consumers want to know <strong>where their wine comes from<\/strong>, <strong>who made it and how<\/strong>!
