French white wine on the world’s tables!<\/h1>\r\nFrance<\/b> is a <\/span>wine-producing country<\/b> with a wide range of colors and styles. Between <\/span>red wine<\/b>, <\/span>white wine<\/b> and <\/span>ros\u00e9 wine<\/b>, red wine has long been the favorite of the French, but trends are changing!<\/span>\r\n

Growing demand for white wines in France<\/span><\/h2>\r\n \r\n\r\nAccording to the Sowine\/Dinata 2023 barometer, this year 93% of respondents said <\/span>white wine <\/b>was preferred to other colors, compared to 91% in 2022. This is also in line with a <\/span>trend in the consumption of alcoholic products<\/b>. While men today tend to drink more beer, women are still fond of wine, especially white wine! In fact, men tend to drink more red wine than women, but have been favoring beer in recent years.<\/span>\r\n

The appeal of sparkling wines<\/span><\/h3>\r\n \r\n\r\nWhile <\/span>Champagnes<\/b> have built up a solid reputation in France and abroad, the appeal of <\/span>sparkling wines<\/b> is in full swing. The vast majority of sparkling wines are white, made from <\/span>white grape varieties<\/b>. During the summer months, when temperatures are often very hot, their consumption is particularly high.<\/span>\r\n

French white wines on the export market<\/span><\/h2>\r\n \r\n\r\nThe same trend can be observed in export markets as in France: <\/span>demand for white wines<\/b> is on the rise! In the <\/span>United States<\/b>, for example, <\/span>one of the world’s biggest wine importers<\/b>, 44% of wines consumed are white. The trend seems to be the same in<\/span> Italy <\/b>and<\/span> Germany<\/b>, where the appeal of<\/span> white wines<\/b> continues to grow.<\/span>\r\n

French vineyards increasingly white<\/span><\/h2>\r\n \r\n\r\nWinegrowers<\/b> and <\/span>winegrowers’ associations<\/b> understand this trend towards <\/span>white wine consumption<\/b>. While many of <\/span>France’s wine-growing regions<\/b> are renowned for producing predominantly white wines, this is not the case for others. Regions renowned for the <\/span>quality of their red wines<\/b> are increasingly <\/span>producing more white wines<\/b>, thanks to a <\/span>focus on white grape varieties<\/b>.<\/span>\r\n

\u00a0French white wine regions<\/span><\/h2>\r\n \r\n

Alsace white grape varieties<\/span><\/h3>\r\n \r\n\r\nFrance’s wine-growing regions<\/b>, renowned for their <\/span>production of white wines<\/b>, have seen their popularity increase in recent years. Such is the case of <\/span>Alsace<\/b>, where <\/span>Riesling<\/b> is king. In Alsace, it produces <\/span>dry<\/b>, <\/span>semi-dry<\/b> and <\/span>sweet white wines<\/b>, as well as <\/span>sparkling Cr\u00e9mants d’Alsace<\/b>. Other white grape varieties found in <\/span>Alsace <\/b>include <\/span>Muscat<\/b>, <\/span>Pinot gris<\/b> and <\/span>Gewurztraminer<\/b>.<\/span>\r\n

White grape varieties Loire Valley<\/span><\/h3>\r\n \r\n\r\nIn the <\/span>Loire Valley<\/b>, while <\/span>Chenin<\/b> is the region’s favorite grape variety, as is <\/span>Riesling in Alsace<\/b>, producing <\/span>dry white wines<\/b>, <\/span>sweet white wines <\/b>and <\/span>cr\u00e9mants<\/b>, other <\/span>white grape varieties <\/b>also produce <\/span>superb white wines<\/b>. These include <\/span>Melon de Bourgogne<\/b>, the <\/span>Muscadet grape<\/b>, <\/span>Sauvignon blanc<\/b>, <\/span>Chardonnay<\/b> and <\/span>Chasselas<\/b>.<\/span>\r\n

Jura, Savoie et Juran\u00e7on<\/span><\/h3>\r\n \r\n\r\nOther <\/span>wine-growing regions<\/b>, smaller than the <\/span>Loire Valley <\/b>or <\/span>Alsace<\/b>, produce mainly <\/span>white wine <\/b>and are increasingly sought-after in France and around the world. In the <\/span>Jura wine region<\/b>, <\/span>Chardonnay<\/b> and <\/span>Savagnin<\/b> take pride of place. In <\/span>Savoie<\/b>, several <\/span>white grape varieties<\/b> produce <\/span>dry white wines <\/b>whose quality increases from <\/span>vintage to vintage<\/b>, thanks to <\/span>Jacqu\u00e8re<\/b>, <\/span>Roussanne<\/b>, <\/span>Roussette <\/b>and<\/span> Chasselas<\/b>.<\/span>\r\n

Bordeaux vineyards<\/span><\/h3>\r\n \r\n\r\nIn the 50s and 70s, <\/span>Bordeaux vineyards<\/b> were more white than red! Faced with a <\/span>demand for red wine<\/b>, red grape varieties would have taken on greater importance in the vineyard. Thanks to <\/span>Bordeaux appellations<\/b> producing <\/span>white wines<\/b> renowned for their good value, such as <\/span>AOP Entre-deux-mers<\/b>,<\/span> AOP Bordeaux <\/b>and <\/span>AOP Bordeaux Sup\u00e9rieur<\/b>, <\/span>white grape varieties <\/b>are gaining ground to meet international demand.<\/span>\r\n

Burgundy vineyards<\/span><\/h3>\r\n \r\n\r\nBurgundy’s vineyards<\/b> have also ‘whitened’, with production now more white than red! Appellations renowned for the <\/span>high quality of their white wines<\/b>, made from the <\/span>Chardonnay grape variety<\/b>, continue to grow in popularity. These include <\/span>AOP Montrachet<\/b>, <\/span>AOP Corton Charlemagne<\/b>, <\/span>AOP Meursault<\/b>, <\/span>AOP Fixin<\/b> and <\/span>AOP Chablis<\/b>.<\/span>\r\n

The Rhone vineyards<\/span><\/h3>\r\n \r\n\r\nAs far as the <\/span>Rhone vineyards<\/b> are concerned, the <\/span>Condrieu appellation d’origine contr\u00f4l\u00e9e<\/b> is definitely the <\/span>best-known white wine<\/b>! Otherwise, it’s <\/span>high-quality red wines <\/b>that are mainly associated with this <\/span>wine-growing region<\/b>.
